Enrique Barón Crespo
Former President of the European Parliament
Enrique Barón Crespo graduated in Law from the University of Madrid and continued his studies at ESSEC International Business School in Paris. As a practicing lawyer, Barón Crespo specialised in labour law and practiced as a human rights lawyer between 1970 and 1974. He is a member of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party and sits with the Party of European Socialists Group in the European Parliament. He was a Deputy in the Cortes (1977-1987), representing the Madrid region and was Minister of Transport, Tourism and Communications (1982-1985). After election to the European Parliament he then became President of the European Parliament (1989-1992), Chairman of the Group of the Party of European Socialists in the European Parliament (1999-2004) and Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs (1992-1995) amongst other roles. He currently serves as President of the European Foundation for Information Society and Chairman of the Board of the International Yehudi Menuhin Foundation.
